For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have multiple openings for undergraduate and graduate students and recent bachelors or master’s level graduates within one year, to engage in practical research experience to further their educational goals. You will conduct research in the fields of nuclear physics, radiation transport, hydrodynamics, astrophysics, plasma dynamics, numerical methods and computer science. Research projects combine theory with computation and are geared to further the students’ educational goals. This position is in the Weapons and Complex Integration (WCI) directorate.

Essential Duties
At the Undergraduate Level (Non-Exempt):
- Students will work with mentors under close supervision on their assigned projects.
- An oral presentation of each project is required at the end of the summer.
-Students will also be required to present their work at a poster session.
In Addition at the Graduate Level (Exempt):
- Students receive less-specific direction in their supervision.
- Students are assigned projects of greater complexity and given more freedom and responsibility to come up with fundamental solutions

Qualifications
At the Undergraduate Level (Non-Exempt):
- Must be currently enrolled in an accredited university and actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science or a related field.
- Must be able to apply basic principles of physics, engineering and/or computer science to solve technical problems.
- Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Must be able to work effectively in a team environment.
In Addition at the Graduate Level (Exempt):
- Must be currently enrolled in an accredited university and actively pursuing a graduate degree or a recent Bachelors or Masters graduate within one year in Physics, Engineering, Mathematics, Computer Science or a related field.
- Must have experience applying basic principles of physics, engineering and/or computer science to solve technical problems.
- Math, Physics and Engineering majors should intend to complete a Ph.D.
- Students should have a track record of achievement in their field of study.

Desired Qualifications
- GPA of 3.5 or above.

Pre-Placement Medical Exam:  A job related pre-placement medical examination may be required.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.
 

Anticipated Clearance Level:  None.

 

Note:   This is a Temporary Student Intern appointment.  This assignment is for a full-time position during the summer academic break. Refer to the Scholar Program website at https://scholars.llnl.gov/ for additional student employment information.

Salaries are based on student academic level.
