For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have multiple openings for graduate students to engage in practical research experience to further their educational goals. The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) Nuclear Forensics Summer Internship program is designed to give you an opportunity to come to LLNL for 8 weeks to carry out research under the supervision of a staff scientist, attend a weekly lecture series, interact with other students, and present your work in poster format at the end of the program. The goal of this program is to facilitate the training of the next generation of nuclear scientists to solve critical national security problems in the field of nuclear forensics and environmental radiochemistry.
Essential Duties
- Students will work with engineers and scientists to engage in research projects in the disciplines of actinide and radiochemistry, isotopic analysis, radiation detection, and nuclear engineering in order to strengthen the pipeline for future scientific disciplines.
- Under limited direction and supervision will conduct research in assigned area.
- Perform technical assignments of a basic degree of complexity and provide advanced technical support to scientist in scientific research and development projects.
- Communicate work through presentations and/or poster sessions.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Must be a continuing college or university student in good standing at an accredited institution pursuing a graduate degree.                                                                                      
- Must be a US citizen.
- Demonstrated academic achievement in the fields of physics, chemistry, geology and geochemistry, nuclear engineering, chemical engineering or environmental sciences.                                                                                                          
- Experience applying basic scientific principles to solve technical problems. 
- Demonstrated effective communication skills.
- Ability to present and communicate concepts and ideas.
- Experience working with personal computers and familiarity with Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work in a team environment.

Desired Qualifications
- GPA of 3.0 or above.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Anticipated Clearance Level:  None.


Note:   This is a Temporary Student Intern appointment.  This assignment is for a full-time position during the summer academic break (June 12 - August 4, 2017).  Salaries are based on academic standing and compensation rates established by LLNL’s Human Resources department. Travel costs to and from LLNL are provided.  Selected applicants will be required to provide transcripts.  Refer to the Scholar Program website at additional student employment information.
