For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Materials Science and Engineering Post College Appointee. You will execute experiments and characterization of sealant materials that may perform up to 500°C. Project opportunities may include other additional research projects areas with potentially different technical goals and include processing from powders of ceramics and metals. This position is located in the Polymers and Ceramics Group of the Materials Engineering Division (MED).
Essential Duties
- Conduct research and development of sealants that perform in moderate temperature range including thermal exposure testing of sealant materials.
- Characterize materials derived from powders including mixed phase sealants.
- Organize, analyze, and present data from experiments on sealing materials and develop new concepts and improve understanding of these materials.
- Collaborate with Scientists and Engineers to accomplish research goals.
- Recent Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Materials Engineering, or Ceramic Engineering. (Within two years of application).
- Experience with one or more of the following areas: inorganic materials processing, thermal processing of materials, thermodynamics and thermal analysis of materials, powder processing, defect and failure analysis, or fire or flame resistant sealant materials including practical hands on experimental experience.
- Broad general background in Materials Science demonstrated by coursework, training, and/or work experience.
- Demonstrated proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Demonstrated initiative, interpersonal skills, creativity, and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with thermal analysis techniques such as TGA, TMA, DSC, and dilatometry.
- Experience with continuum based computational analysis of stress and deformation or analysis of thermal stresses using software tools such as COMSOL Multiphysics®.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Anticipated Clearance Level:  Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.  If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.


Note:   This is a one-year Post College Appointee.  Eligible candidates are recent graduates within two years of the month of the degree at the time of the employment offer.
