For more than 60 years, the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has applied science and technology to make the world a safer place.

We have an opening for a Materials Science and Engineering Post College Appointee. You will execute design, assembly, characterization, and experiments of novel polymer, plastic, and fiber composite formulations related to a wide range of technologies and applications. Project opportunities may include other additional research projects areas with potentially different technical goals and include engineering design and assembly, aging studies, mechanical behavior, rheology of materials, thermal analysis, precision measurements, and data analysis. This position is in the Plastics Group of the Materials Engineering Division (MED), within the Engineering Directorate.
Essential Duties
- Conduct research and development of polymer, fiber composites, and plastic formulations related to a wide variety of programmatic applications and deliverables.
- Organize, analyze, and present data from experiments related to polymer and plastic based technologies.
- Characterize materials and polymers, plastics, and related materials. 
- Collaborate with scientists and engineers to accomplish research goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Recent Bachelor’s (BS) or Master’s (MS) degree in Materials Science and Engineering, Polymer Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
- Experience with one or more of the following areas: polymer formulations, fiber composites processing, optical microscopy, metrology of micro-scale structures, and macro scale polymer behavior, mechanical testing, or thermal analysis.
- Broad general background in Materials Science and Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering, Polymer Chemistry, demonstrated by coursework, training, and/or work experience.
- Demonstrated proficient verbal and written communication skills to collaborate effectively in a team environment and present and explain technical information.
- Demonstrated initiative, interpersonal skills, creativity, and ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience with photocurable polymers, thermal post-processing of materials, and rheology.
- Experience in both thermal (TGA, DSC,TMA) and mechanical (compression/tensile) test analysis.
- Experience with CAD, analytical modeling, and computational modeling such as finite element analysis.

Pre-Employment Drug Test:  External applicant(s) selected for this position will be required to pass a post-offer, pre-employment drug test.

Security Clearance:  This position requires a Department of Energy (DOE) Q-level clearance.

If you are selected, we will initiate a Federal background investigation to determine if you meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information or matter. In addition, all L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing. If you hold multiple citizenships (U.S. and another country), you may be required to renounce your non-U.S. citizenship before a DOE L or Q clearance will be processed/granted.

Note:   This is a one-year Post College Appointee with the possibility of extension to a maximum of two years. Eligible candidates are recent graduates within two years of the month of the degree at the time of the employment offer.
